DT Swiss Rims Won't Send You to the Hospital...
I'm sorry to hear about the ER visit due to weinmann rims. I choose what I build at mobius for quality and nothing else. I have also found velocity deep vs to be low quality as well (and dangerous during failure). I like colors too, which is why I started the Keirin Jersey Color program on DT Swiss rims. The DT Swiss 1.2 is the answer to my long time prayer for a quality deep section rim. The best we used to be able to get was the Mavic CXP series. Unfortunately Mavic started making their rims in Asia a few years ago as well. It was the end of an era.
The Problem with Biking in America
Having seen the light while studying abroad in Amsterdam, Nick Martens contrasts that bicycle Nirvana with the American cycling cesspool.
"Of the many complaints an American cyclist can make, a concern over his or her safety is the most serious. It’s also the best reason to stick with a car.
Safety equipment is not the answer to this problem; it’s a symptom of it."
Taking great cycle photography
It's all in the setup. A decent digital camera with halogen work lights can be used to create superior close up detail shots. Ray Dobbins describes his process for backdrops and lighting.
"I used to combine my halogen work lights with the existing fluorescent ceiling lights, thinking more was better. Not so, when they are two different types of light. Halogen/tungsten casts a yellow tint, and fluorescent casts a blue tint. Most digital cameras have white-balance settings that compensate for the tinting, but this feature doesn't work as well with mixed lighting."
