U.S. women score pair of top-ten finishes in Olympic MTB race
The United States Cycling Team closed out its 2008 Olympic Games campaign on Saturday with mixed results as it claimed a pair of top-ten finishes in the women's cross country mountain bike race, but failed to earn a placing in the men's event. Mary McConneloug placed seventh to lead all Americans on the day while compatriot Georgia Gould finished eighth. On the men's side, both Adam Craig and Todd Wells were pulled from the race after being lapped by the lead riders.
Americans win three medals in Olympic debut of BMX racing
The United States collected three more medals in the sport of cycling on Friday when Americans Mike Day, Donny Robinson and Jill Kintner were among the first athletes to grace the podium in the newest Olympic sport of Bicycle Motocross (BMX). Day and Robinson won the silver and bronze medals in the men's contest, while Kintner added a bronze in the women's race. Election results are in after record number of votes cast in 2008
The 2008 USA Cycling elections concluded on Aug. 15 and after record voter turnout, USA Cycling members elected several representatives to thier respective Boards of Trustees which comprise the political structure of USA Cycling. The 2008 election saw a record number of 3,852 votes cast as USA Cycling announced elected trustees to the BMXA, NCCA, NORBA, USCF and USPRO boards.
U.S. advances three men to semifinals in debut of Olympic BMX
Bicycle Motocross made its Olympic debut Wednesday as American athletes illustrated their might by advancing all three men's competitors to Thursday's semifinal heats. Kyle Bennett, Mike Day and Donny Robinson all qualified for the round of 16. By doing so, the U.S. is the only country that advanced three competitors to Thursday's semifinals. In the women's event, Jill Kintner qualified seventh and will compete in the semifinals on Thursday before the Olympic Games hand out its first-ever BMX medals.
USA Cycling National Racing Calendar Standings: August 17
Jeff Louder won the general classification in front of his home crowd at the National Racing Calendar's 31st event, the Tour of Utah. With only three events remaining on the 2008 NRC, Rory Sutherland continues to hold a commanding lead in the overall individual standings on the men's side while Tina Pic is the current womenandrsquo;s leader. USA Cycling supports proposed plan for the future of pro cycling
At the Olympic Games on Monday, the UCI held a press conference to publicize a new plan for the structure of professional cycling following weeks of negotiations between the sport's international governing body and Editions Pillipe Amaury, the owner of the ASO and the Societe du Tour de France. As a result, the UCI unveiled key elements of the plan. To show its support of the UCI, the EPA and the proposed agreement, USA Cycling issued the following statement on Monday afternoon from China.
Reed eliminated from medal contention, Hammer crashes out
Day four of Olympic track cycling at the Laoshan velodrome ended on a sour note for the U.S. squad after Sarah Hammer crashed out of the women's points race and Jennie Reed was eliminated from medal contention with a quarterfinal loss in the women's match sprint. With one day of track racing remaining in Beijing, the Madison pairing of Mike Friedman and Bobby Lea will give the U.S. its last chance to collect a medal in the discipline.
Junior Track Nationals close with five more titles awarded
The USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships came to a close today with five new national champions being crowned at the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Southern California. The final day started out with Eric Meier having a stellar ride in the men's 17-18 ten-kilometer scratch race. After a breakaway of three riders took control of the race in the final lap, Meier picked up his first stars-and-stripes jersey with a win over silver medalist Lanell Rockmore and bronze medalist Iggy Silva. Epes Harris and Dan Heeley rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
Reed advances to quarterfinals of women's match sprint
With no Americans competing in the lone medal event in track cycling on Saturday at the Olympic Games, all eyes were on Jennie Reed and Michael Blatchford as they contested the qualifying heats and preliminary rounds of the match sprint. At the end of the evening, Reed remained in contention for a medal, but Blatchford was eliminated, drawing a close to his Olympic experience. Reed will next square off against Lithuania's Simona Krupeckaite in Monday's quarterfinals. Also on Monday, Sarah Hammer will compete for a medal in the women's points race.
Eight titles awarded on penultimate day of Junior Track Nationals
Eight more national titles were awarded on Saturday after an action-packed penultimate day at the USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships. After qualifying in first with a time of 11.432 over 200 meters, Lanell Rockmore breezed through his semi-final rounds and faced Epes Harris in the finals. Rockmore one the first two rounds to take the gold medal. In the race for bronze, Daniel Walker beat out Tynan Farley. Rounding out the podium in fifth was Trent Boyd.
Phinney seventh in individual pursuit in Beijing
In the second day of Olympic track cycling competition in Beijing, Americans failed to advance to the medal rounds of both the men's and women's individual pursuit as both Sarah Hammer and Taylor Phinney were eliminated from contention in their respective first-round matchups. In the men's keirin, Giddeon Massie narrowly missed out on advancing to the second round after finishing third in his round-one heat and fourth in the ensuing repechage. Also, Bobby Lea dropped out of the points race after playing the role of early aggressor and taking a lap on the field.
Five more titles awarded on day 2 of Junior Track Nationals
National championship racing continued on Friday at the ADT Event Center Velodrome in suburban L.A. as stars-and-stripes jerseys were awarded for junior racing in five events. The first national title of the day was awarded to Lanell Rockmore who posted a time of 1:09.171 in the menandrsquo;s 17-18 1-kilometer time trial to claim the top step of the podium. Epes Harris completed the four laps in 1:09.512 to score the silver medal while Alan Ting finished in 1:09.675 for the bronze.Dan Heeley and Daniel Walker rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
Junior Track Nationals award 4 stars-and-stripes jerseys Thursday
The USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships kicked off on Thursday with four national championship titles awarded in men's and women's 17-18 events during the morning and evening sessions. Junior World Championships bronze medalist Colleen Hayduk scored two national titles on opening day - one in the women's 17-18 500-meter time trial and the other in the scratch race. In men's 17-18 competition, Kit Karzen saw a thrilling victory in the men's points race while Epes Harris captured a national title in the keirin.
Phinney, Hammer advance in Beijing, team sprint squad 8th
As track cycling began at the Olympic Games on Friday, the United States took its first step towards the medal rounds of the men's and women's individual pursuit when both Taylor Phinney and Sarah Hammer advanced to the first round from their respective qualifying heats. Phinney qualified seventh and Hammer fifth. Next they'll need to win their ensuing first round head-to-head matchups in order to advance to the medal rounds. Also on Friday, the team sprint trio of Michael Blatchford, Adam Duvendeck and Giddeon Massie rode to an eighth-place finish.

USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships kick off Thursday
As the worldandrsquo;s best track cyclists take to the Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing this week, the next generation of American track cyclists will converge in Southern California for the 2008 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships. The event, which begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday, will see approximately 130 young riders vie for seventeen national titles at the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Carson.
Armstrong wins Olympic gold medal in time trial; Leipheimer bronze
With a victory in the individual time trial on Wednesday, Kristin Armstrong became just the second woman in American cycling history to win Olympic gold while compatriot Levi Leipheimer continued a streak of bronze medals for U.S. men in the race against the clock. The U.S. now has seven Olympic medals in the time trial to its credit since the event's inception in 1996 - four more than the next best country. Armstrong joins Connie Carpenter-Phinney as the only gold medalists in U.S. women's cycling, while Leipheimer continues a streak of bronze since Lance Armstrong (2000) and Bobby Julich (2004).

Mattis nabs elite men's road race title, Carlsen crowned U23 champ
The 2008 USA Cycling Junior, U23 and Elite Road National Championships concluded in Orange County on Sunday as James Mattis captured the elite title and Kirk Carlsen led his team to a sweep of the podium in the U23 contest. Evan Huffman also claimed the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the men's junior 17-18 road race. While the elites and U23's head home, the juniors will remain in Southern California for another week to contest the USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships at the ADT Event Center in Carson, Aug. 14-17
